Manufactured by Suzuki, the DL1000 or V-Strom 1000, is an "enduro sport tourer" motorcycle (sometimes included in the dual-sport category) with a 996 cc V-twin engine and a standard riding posture. Unlike specialized motorcycles, the V-Strom trades strength in a single area for adaptability to a variety of conditions: commuting, cruising, adventure touring and to a lesser degree off-road riding.
The name V-Strom combines V referring to the bikes engine configuration with the German Strom, meaning stream or current. To differentiate the DL1000 from its DL650 stablemate, users have nicknamed them Vee and Wee, respectively (i.e., Vee-strom or Wee-strom).
The V-Strom motorcycle is based on the V-twin engine initially designed for the Suzuki TL1000S and TL1000R motorcycles.
The V-Strom incorporates design elements from other suzuki motorcycles including Fuel Injection based on the GSX-R models. A smaller-engined version, Suzuki DL650 V-Strom is also manufactured.
Kawasaki marketed an identical version of the bike named the KLV1000 in Europe.
